What Are The Types Of Brain Injury?

Every brain injury is unique in itself. Brain injuries vary based on the type and amount of force and where it impacts the brain. The damage may affect only one part of the brain or several functional parts. Brain injury treatment centers say that traumatic brain injury is the most common. The two prevalent injuries within TBI are concussion and contusion. Next on the list is acquired brain injury or ABI. These happen after strokes, drowning or tumours. Unlike TBI, ABI generally doesn't occur due to external force.

Understanding Concussion And Contusion

A concussion occurs due to a direct blow to the brain, like due to a gunshot, violent movement of the head or whiplash. Because it can happen in both open and closed head injuries, it is the most common TBI. When the brain receives a sudden trauma, the blood vessels stretch, and sometimes there is damage to cranial nerves. The symptoms of a concussion are:

  • Brief loss of consciousness.

  • If the person is conscious, then dizziness occurs.

Concussion, at times, do not show in a CAT Scan. While swelling or bleeding in the brain along with skull fracture do occur, they are not always there. It is for this reason concussions are diagnosed by process of exclusion.

The damage from a concussion can be temporary or permanent. If there is a blood clot, which happens occasionally, it can be fatal. Impairments due to concussions can be easily treated with brain rehabilitation. At times, it may take a few years to heal the concussion.

A contusion is bleeding or bruising in the brain. It always happens when there is a direct impact on the head. If the contusion is significant, then it may be removed through surgery.

These were common traumatic brain injuries. Let’s move on to the two acquired brain injuries now.

Understanding Anoxia And Hypoxia Brain Injuries

When the brain fails to receive enough oxygen, then an anoxic brain injury happens. Because brain cells need oxygen to function, they die when anoxia occurs. There are three types of anoxic brain injuries:

  • Anoxic anoxia injury happens when there is no oxygen supply to the brain.

  • Anaemic anoxia injury ensues when the blood in the brain fails to carry enough oxygen.

  • Toxic Anoxia injury occurs when the oxygen supply to the brain is blocked either by metabolites or toxins.

Hypoxic brain injury is the result of insufficient oxygen supply to the brain. There is some oxygen but not enough for the brain to function correctly. The hypoxic brain injury that is most common is called stagnant hypoxia.

It happens when the blood pressure is very low, or the blow flow to the brain has been critically lessened. It is the lack of proper blood flow that causes hypoxic-ischemic brain injury.
